There are many great bird watching sites within easy reach of The Snug. The internationally renowned Cley Marsh is a 30min drive away, and even closer, though harder to find, is Hickling Broad where, from the Raptor Viewing Platform at sunset, you can watch spectacular cranes, roosting marsh harriers and hunting barn owls. Visit the Norfolk Wildlife Trust for more details. RSPB sites include the famous Titchwell Marsh (about an hour’s drive) with shop and café, and, at the other end of the scale, the remote Berney Marshes which can only be reached by rail (ask the driver to stop!), river or a four-mile slog on foot from the nearest place to park a car. Visit the RSPB for all the info. Alternatively you can take up station in the grounds surrounding The Snug and let the birds come to you! We’ve seen sparrow hawks, cuckoo, green woodpeckers, barn owls, woodcock and black pheasant from the comfort of our own viewing platform. And if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the various species of deer or the resident fox which visit our field.
